American journalist Nellie Bly (Elizabeth Jane Cochrane) made headlines when she voluntarily faked her own insanity and spent ten days in an insane asylum to report on the conditions and treatment of committed patients. Her series of articles were later compiled into one work called "Ten Days in a Mad-House," which exposed the brutal and inhumane conditions that patients of these asylums were exposed to. Her articles served to shed light on an issue rarely discussed in the general public and would bring awareness to the outside world. Bly's book is one of intense dehumanization and abuse, but also of Bly's extreme courage to commit herself to exposing the truth.
