Prior to the late 1800's, most mentally ill patients were kept in prisons or brutal lunatic asylums. Often called "The Voice of the Mad," Dorothea Dix was a Massachusetts native whom spent a portion of her life advocating for mental health reform in America. After observing the horrible conditions of local asylums, Dorothea began a crusade to educate the public and move the government to action.
